How a Residential Water Mitigation Claim Recovered $1,416 in Overlooked Labor and Safety Line Items

When water damage occurs, mitigation cannot always wait for an insurance carrier’s approval. The priority is to address the water immediately and prevent further damage to the property. Extraction, structural drying, dehumidification, and other necessary mitigation work needs to begin right away, with the invoice prepared afterward based on the work performed.

In this case, the mitigation company drafted an invoice and shared it with us to review. Our team conducted a line-by-line analysis and noticed that several supporting items were missing. While the invoice accounted for the major mitigation work—including extraction, structural drying, dehumidification, and equipment—it did not include general labor, personal protective equipment, contents protection, dehumidifier filters, and debris handling.

We included the necessary line items in the supplement and submitted it to the carrier. The result was $1,416.34 in additional coverage approved in full, bringing the claim from $11,173.76 to $12,590.10, an increase of roughly 13%. Every line item requested was approved.

This case shows why reviewing a mitigation invoice before it reaches the carrier can make a meaningful difference. The primary drying and extraction services may be easy to identify, but the labor, safety, protection, and cleanup items that support the work can sometimes be overlooked. Catching those omissions early helps ensure the invoice more accurately reflects the work required to properly mitigate the property.

The Gap Between the Approved Invoice and the Real Scope of Work

Mitigation invoices often capture the equipment and drying but leave out the labor and safety line items that support them. Below is a side-by-side look at how documenting the omitted scope brought the invoice in line with the work that was actually performed.

Project Overview

  • Property Type: Residential
  • Location: Spokane, Washington
  • Trade(s) Involved: Water Mitigation
  • Cause of Loss: Water Damage

When water damage happens, the mitigation work often starts before anyone has time to think about the insurance estimate. The priority is stopping the water and preventing further damage to the property.

The mitigation company’s water mitigation invoice included the core extraction and drying work needed to address the damage. Before the invoice was submitted to the carrier for approval, however, our team took a closer look and found several standard items that had been left out, including general labor, personal protective equipment, contents protection, and debris disposal. These weren’t extras—they were part of the work needed to safely and properly complete the mitigation based on the conditions found on site.

The Original Invoice

Original Invoice Amount: $11,173.76

What the original scope included:

The  initial invoice covered the primary mitigation equipment and process: Vacuum, water extraction, heat/structural drying (thermal mover), dehumidification, HEPA air filtration, a negative air scrubber, and power distribution, along with joist cleaning, application of a plant-based antimicrobial agent, tear-out and reinstallation of batt insulation, tear-out and bagging of baseboard and non-salvageable floating floor, floor protection, emergency personnel and equipment mobilization, equipment setup, monitoring, and decontamination.

What was missing:

  • General labor, including additional hours required to work safely in confined spaces
  • Personal protective equipment (PPE)
  • Cover and protection for furniture and appliances
  • Contents manipulation
  • Dehumidifier filter
  • Debris removal and disposal

Why a Supplement Was Required

The equipment and drying were accounted for, but a fully scoped mitigation job depends on the labor and safety items that surround them. A thorough  review showed the invoice left out the general labor hours needed to navigate confined spaces safely, the PPE required to perform the work, the cover and protection for the homeowner’s furniture and appliances, contents manipulation, the dehumidifier filter, and the removal and disposal of debris generated during clean-up . Because these items were part of the work required to complete the mitigation, documenting them supported the need for a supplement.

Is Your Mitigation Invoice Missing the Labor and Safety Items You Actually Performed? We Can Help.

In this case, the carrier approved the equipment and drying but left out the labor, PPE, contents protection, and debris handling that the job required. Mitigation invoices can look complete on the surface and still fall short of reflecting the work required to complete a mitigation job. In this case, taking a closer look before the invoice was finalized helped capture $1,416.34 in additional work that would have otherwise been left off the claim. For contractors, that kind of review can mean the difference between being paid for the full scope of work and absorbing the cost. If you have a mitigation invoice you want reviewed, Claim Supplement Pro can help take a second look.

I cannot recommend Vlad and his team enough. As someone who is still learning the supplement process, finding a company that is not only knowledgeable but also patient and willing to educate has been invaluable.
From day one, Vlad has gone above and beyond to answer every question I have had. He and his team are incredibly responsive, attentive, professional, and truly care about helping their clients succeed. Their communication is excellent, and I always feel supported throughout the entire process.
A special thank you to Mandy as well. She has been absolutely amazing, helpful, knowledgeable, and always willing to assist whenever needed.
Before working with this team, I tried other supplement companies, but the experience and results have not compared. The outcomes we have achieved on our claims have exceeded my expectations, and I am extremely happy with the service they provide.
Whether you are brand new to supplements or have years of experience in the industry, I highly recommend Vlad and his team. They have earned my trust and my business, and I look forward to continuing to work with them for many years to come.
Thank you for everything you do!

I’ve been working with Vlad and Jason for the past couple of months now, and after giving them a handful of claims to work on, I can confidently say these guys are the real deal. Bar none, best results I have had with supplementing roof & exterior claims.

Jason's communication with insurance carriers is excellent. His industry knowledge is insane and he has the background to back it up. Their billing is clean, organized, and easy to understand. Their customer service is excellent. No matter when I call or email, they are always available and willing to help.

I’ve worked with several supplement companies in the past, and honestly, these guys blow them out of the water. We’ve already had multiple claims come back with over $15,000 in supplemental return, and they consistently find things that others miss.

On top of that, they’ve introduced me to other great contacts in the industry and have been an overall pleasure to work with. I genuinely do not plan on going anywhere else anytime soon.

If anyone in the industry wants to personally reach out to me about my experience or even see some of the scopes they’ve worked on, I’d be more than happy to share.

Thank you again, Vlad and Jason. You guys have been incredible to work with.
